How We Research

Updated on

Every guide on Sun Fired Food answers one question: will this dehydrator make the jerky and dried food you want, in the amounts you make? A machine has to hold your batch, heat evenly and fit the way you cook.

Here is how we get to an answer.

1. We start with the batch

A few pounds of beef on a weekend and a whole deer's worth of trim in December need very different machines. We look at tray count, tray size and the total drying area each maker gives.

We also note whether the trays are stainless steel or plastic, and whether extra trays can be added later.

2. We check how it heats and moves air

Rear-fan box dehydrators push air across every tray. Stacking round models blow air up or down through the middle.

We compare fan position, wattage, the top temperature and the timer. Jerky needs a machine that reaches the heat the USDA and the maker's manual call for, so we check that number first.

3. We compare build and features

We look at door style, tray spacing, digital or dial controls, auto shutoff, noise and how easy the trays are to clean. We also note the warranty each maker gives.

Makers describe their own products, so we name the brand for every claim. For example, we write "Cosori says" rather than stating a promise as fact.

4. We read what owners report

We look for patterns in what owners say after months of use. Uneven drying, loud fans, cracked trays and short lifespans all count.

One unhappy owner doesn't sink a machine. A pattern does.

5. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and owner feedback against what you're shopping for. A big 16-tray machine may score high for deer season and lower in a guide for a small kitchen.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

6. We keep pages current

Models change, and makers sell near twins under different names. We check model numbers, link only new units and skip anything with a known recall.

When a guide changes in a real way, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks come from research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have dried jerky in every machine we cover.

Food safety comes from the USDA's guidance and your dehydrator's manual, not from us. Follow both every time you dry meat.
